Scagliola stone, unlike anything else available in
the marketplace today, is skillfully formed and finished
by hand, achieving a natural stone texture of amazing
clarity and depth.
Unlike the process used to produce common cast stone,
a process involving pouring liquid concrete into molds,
Scagliola Stone is developed entirely by hand.
Such fine craftsmanship provides Scagliola stone
with the integrity, consistency and appearance of
authentic stone...
The word "scagliola" derives from the Italian
"scaglia", which means "scales or chips
of stone".
Italian monks principally developed this technique
in the 17th Century, later duplicated by Italian and
French craftsmen who applied Scagliola stone to many
architectural applications.
The formula used to achieve this authentic stone
technique was kept extremely secretive, and as a result,
the Italian craft had all but disappeared by the late
19th Century.
